David Shevlino

Inspired early on by books about the Old Masters David found at a yard sale, David began visiting museums and gravitated to paintings from the Renaissance up to Impressionism.  By the time he was 16 he decided that he would attend art school and enrolled directly after high school.  David had a traditional and classical training, yet his present work tends to be loose and sometimes abstract.  He often uses large brushes to mass in tones and colors, simplifying the amount of visual information.

David says a common misconception which he sometimes encounters with his students is that a loose application of the paint is somehow easy.  He finds that it’s not easier at all compared to a more traditional painting approach.  In fact, it can be more challenging in some ways due in part to simplifying your brush work requires a lot of decisions to be made.  Look hard and think about what information needs to be there – and what does not.
